rFoil®: Reflective Insulation For Secure Environments
Are you working on building a secure work environment, secure space, or SCIF in your facility?
As an authorized distributor of CoverTech Fabricating, Inc.’s industry-leading Ultra NT rFoil®, Signals Defense carries the supplies and technologies to help you do it while meeting even the most stringent standards. rFoil® is an aluminum foil-based radiant barrier that consists of two reflective surfaces between a high-strength reinforced woven polyethylene scrim. Its impressively high shielding capacity can reduce electromagnetic (EM) and radio frequency (RF) signals from emanating through solid barriers, such as walls, ceilings, or floors.
Read on to learn more about rFoil®, why you should use it and some of the ideal applications of the product.
Why Use rFoil?
Ultra NT rFoil® should be considered when you want to take security in a particular environment to the next level, whether it’s an entire office or just part of a building, like a sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF).
Data theft from electronic eavesdropping is a major threat that all businesses and entities should be aware of. It occurs when sensitive information is intercepted through the capture of signals emitted by electronic equipment, such as phones, speakers, headsets, Bluetooth devices and more that rely on frequencies to send and receive information. Oftentimes, these signals extend beyond the four walls of a room or facility and could be intercepted by a third party who could then infiltrate data systems and access confidential or sensitive information. That’s why prevention is so important.
Signals Defense offers several RF building materials to help contain signals and safeguard data, including rFoil®. rFoil® is best installed in walls, ceilings and floors during construction or remodeling of SCIFs and other rooms that require shielding. It’s best installed between drywall or gypsum board or attached directly to a substrate, like concrete. For best results, all joints and seams should be sealed with an RF shielding tape to avoid any gaps where signals could leak.
So when should you use rFoil®? Ideal situations include:
- When you want to meet the Department of Defense’s stringent standards in SCIF environments. To comply with these standards, facilities must include a comprehensive, six-sided RF shielding system complete with the likes of RF paints, radiant barrier foils and specialized RF window film to reduce signals from emanating through walls, ceilings and doors. rFoil® represents a piece of the shielding solution.
- When you want to meet TEMPEST standards for preventing electronic eavesdropping. Meeting TEMPEST standards involves deploying shielding and filtering technologies to mitigate emanations from electronic devices.
- When you want to ensure protection throughout a room or facility in conjunction with other RF/IR shielding products, such as window films and RF paints, tapes and caulk.
Aside from SCIFs, ideal applications for rFoil include U.S. government buildings, corporate buildings, police departments, healthcare facilities, higher education buildings and other high-security projects that either require or desire a certain level of compliance. It comes in stock roll sizes measuring 48″ x 125′.
It’s also worth noting that while rFoil’s primary purpose is to serve as a radiant barrier, it’s also an approved vapor barrier, reflects up to 97 percent of radiant heat and can also help improve sound attenuation.
